Wake up at 11 am, brush your teeth, prepare yourself a coffee, sit by the working table (or go back to bed, whatever suits you the most), turn on your timer and begin to work. It almost sounds like a science-fiction movie, isn't it? Freelancing?
Based on the data from September 2014, 34% or 53 million work capable population in the Unites States are freelancers, and according to certain estimations that percentage by the year of 2020 will cross over 50%.
If we are talking about the European Union market, in 2013 it was notified the growth of 45% of new freelancers and that is from 6.2 million to 8.9 million, making the freelancers a group with the largest and the fastest growth between work capable populations of EU.
Why do so many people decide to become a freelancer?
- Flexible working hours
- Be your own boss
- You can work from wherever you want (all you need to have is a laptop and internet access)
- Much more flexibility with project choice
- Saving time by not using traffic to and from work
And much more...
Let's be realistic, with all the above, one of the biggest reasons is also massive unemployment. Over the internet there are no borders and kilometers are no obstacle, so the high level of unemployment in Serbia is not a reason for you not to find the job.
From one side this is the advantage while on the other side is unfortunate.
Because there are no borders and because you can have your clients from US, Australia, China, Japan etc. the same possibility is available to people from other countries and this makes the creation of one massive global working force.
The good side of this is that someone from the US will pay you for some certain job because you will do it for less money but it's also of a higher quality than if hired someone from the US.
This is a typical example of the free market where the law of supply and demand determine the price of labor. There is no monopoly and gray economy, here the knowledge is valued and not the degree.
Jobs in the highest demand in the next 12months (based on the client’s expectations) will be in the area of web programming and graphic design. So, if these are the areas that you show the interest in and where you have the knowledge of, do not hesitate and offer your services.
Can you make a living out of freelancing?
Based on the research of websites such as Elance and oDesk, more than 63% of freelancer’s contribute to house budget with more than half of total house budget and earnings of 43% of freelancers makes almost all if not total house budget.
The increase of numbers of freelancers and turning people towards this way of earning is surely something that will continue to happen even in the years to come.
So, if you haven't yet, start thinking about the freelancing career and here read the intro to freelancing and find out more about how to begin freelancing career.
Intro to Freelancing - Are you ready for a change?
Did you know that you can do your job from your own home, wearing XXL pajama, when you want it? Go for a vacation when you wish? Earn as much as you want? Scouts honors. It worked for me.
Even though I've known about freelancing, somehow I always connected that with American market and way of living. It looked to me like a typical American dream that is so hard to obtain at my home place. On top of that add our very suspicious mentality that thinks - it has to be a scam. Nothing to catch your attention, isn't it?
Now, after two years of successful freelancing career, I see how many possibilities actually exist and how much I was wrong thinking that for us that is not possible. Why did nobody tell me about that earlier?
I have decided to talk and write. It is time to change habits and way of thinking. Do not wait for a job, find it. The job the way you like it. It's easier than you think!
So, let's begin.
There is a number of websites that represents micro labor markets for freelancers. The most known are Fiverr, PeoplePerHour, and Freelancer. How does this work?
Very simple. Users of these websites are:
The ones who needs your service - companies, agencies, entrepreneurs, and students - anyone who wish to hire a freelancer for a certain job.
Those who offer their services - freelancers.
Like I said, very simple. Employers on these portals place an ad for all interested freelancers. Like regular jobs, after applications, there is a selection, interviews and choosing the candidates. Maybe just you!
In order to get a job as a freelancer, it is necessary to register on one of the websites above. You can do this with only a few easy steps:
Make your own profile. (Advice: nobody will hire you if your profile is not 100% completed - put some effort!) State everything you know and can do. Do you have a previous reference, portfolio or something else? Cool, add that on top. Present yourself in the best possible light. Employers usually spend less than half a minute on your profile - stand out!
Verify your identity. This procedure is different from different pages. Some will ask you to send a passport copy, others live Skype chat...Nothing hard and nothing complicated. And yes, that is also for your safety. For sure you don't want someone else to pretend to be you, don't you?
Pass the exams. Fiverr and PeoplePerHour are offering you a great number of exams which you can pass (for free) in order to prove that you really have abilities that you mention. Exams last around 20 min, and in case you are not happy with the result, you can do it again. At oDesk passing the exams will bring you a great number of possible job applications. Really worth of your time.
Apply. Pick the categories you like and find jobs you believe you can do it. Fill the application and send a cover letter. Voila!
This kind of websites are based on reference system - after any finished job you can leave a comment about the employer, and so can he about you. It is a great way to brand yourself and use positive comments in order to get the next job. At the same time, you will know who are you dealing with.
Unfortunately, this system has one bad side - freelancers without given comments/ references barely get the job. Which means that the beginners are in not so favorable position. However, don't give up. So what if you don't get it in first 10 tries? You will get the eleventh, great comment and there is the next one very shortly.
You have no excuse anymore. There are enough jobs. The real question is - do you want to work?
For all that are ready, here are few tricks (from experience) which will help you to start!
Like I said, fill out your profile 100%. No exceptions. Would you employ someone who found even that difficult?
Pick the photos where you are smiling! Research have shown (so as my experience), that employers don't want a serious person. So - place a smile on your face!
Do not use copy/paste cover letters. It is easier, but at the same time is riskier.
Put yourself in the place of that employer. How long would take you to realize that it's copy/paste version?
You like video more? Awesome! Record your cover letter, upload to YouTube and send the link (not just the link, I didn't tell you that!) to the employer. There is your chance to stand out!
Like any other job even freelancing carries some certain difficulties. One of the biggest problems is: Where to find jobs that are valuable and that will be paid accordingly?
Good news is that trusted and legit websites really exist and that by using them is really possible to found jobs that will certainly be paid. Whether you are a beginner or a pro, whether you are looking for long term or part time jobs, and finally whether you are a programmer or administrative worker, on one of these websites you will certainly find what you are looking for.
Graphic design, digital marketing, writing, translation, recording and fixing the video or sound, programming these are all jobs that are offered at Fiverr.com. Together with a wide variety of job for creatives, financial advisors are also welcome and so as astrologists, doctors and all those who can give their knowledge online. This service exists for a few years already and measures constant growth, and because of that is very popular among business owners and freelancers. Fiverr services are called gigs (so called in the entertainment industry) and depending on users level could be anywhere between $5 and $500. Every gig can have additional gig extras that cost more.
In case you are involved with jobs related to writing or if you are a web programmer, web designer or SEO specialist, this website for job hunting is ideal for you.
